About the SAT

What is the SAT?

The SAT is a digital college-admission test from College Board. It assesses Reading and Writing and Math through a modular format, with official preparation available in Bluebook and through College Board’s study resources.

The SAT focuses on skills developed in school, including interpreting text, revising writing, and solving mathematical problems. Preparation works best when you identify specific skills rather than studying every topic equally.

Use official digital material to understand how the test presents questions and tools. A general worksheet can support a skill, but it does not replace getting comfortable with the actual testing application.

Who is it for?

Students considering SAT scores for college admission or scholarships. Review each institution’s current testing policy.

High-school students and other college applicants may use SAT scores where colleges or scholarship programs require or consider them. Policies differ by institution and can change between admission cycles.

Check the testing policies and deadlines for your own college list. Then choose a date that leaves time for preparation, score release, and any additional attempt you decide is useful.

What does it cover?

Reading and Writing, and Math, including algebra, advanced math, problem solving, data analysis, geometry, and trigonometry.

Reading and Writing includes comprehension, evaluating information, effective expression, and standard written English. Math includes algebra, advanced math, problem solving and data analysis, and geometry and trigonometry.

After a diagnostic test, separate mistakes by skill. Reviewing sentence boundaries, interpreting a graph, and solving an equation are different tasks, even when the questions appear in the same test section.

How is it structured?

The digital SAT has 54 Reading and Writing questions in 64 minutes and 44 Math questions in 70 minutes. Each section has two modules, with a 10-minute break between sections. The second module adapts to performance on the first.

Each SAT section has two modules. Performance in the first module helps determine the difficulty of the second, so use your time thoughtfully throughout each section.

Become familiar with Bluebook navigation and the tools available to you. Practice making a reasonable decision, moving forward when needed, and reviewing within the rules of the current module.

How can I prepare?

Take an official Bluebook practice test. Use the results to focus your study, practice consistently, and review explanations rather than only tracking scores.

Take a full-length Bluebook practice test and review the results in My Practice. Use the skill information to choose focused work in the Student Question Bank or Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy.

Alternate targeted lessons with timed practice, and explain why a missed answer was wrong before repeating that skill. Build a realistic routine around schoolwork rather than relying only on full practice tests.

Official guidance and updates

Exam policies can change. Always confirm the current format, requirements, dates, fees, and accommodations with the exam provider.

Check College Board’s SAT dates, registration deadlines, device requirements, and identification rules. Complete the Bluebook setup steps for your administration and confirm any approved accommodations.

Use Bluebook practice results and My Practice to identify which Reading and Writing or Math skills need attention. Review each college’s testing policy and scholarship requirements when deciding where and when to send scores.
