About the ACT

What is the ACT?

The ACT is a college-admission test with core English, Math, and Reading sections. The current enhanced format also offers Science and Writing options, so your preparation plan should match the sections you intend to take.

The ACT asks you to revise written passages, solve mathematical problems, and understand and analyze reading material. Its separate section time limits make pacing a useful part of preparation.

Use official material for the current format. A resource made for a different version may still help with subject skills, but its question counts or timing may not match your test.

Who is it for?

Students considering ACT scores for college admission or scholarships. Check individual college and program requirements.

College applicants may use ACT scores where institutions or scholarship programs require or consider them. Confirm requirements for your own college list instead of assuming every program uses the same policy.

Check whether any intended program needs Science or Writing information, then select the options and delivery mode that fit your plans. Coordinate your test date with application deadlines and score reporting.

What does it cover?

English, mathematics, and reading, with optional science and writing components.

English focuses on editing and rhetorical decisions, Math on mathematical reasoning, and Reading on understanding and analyzing passages. Optional Science emphasizes interpreting evidence and data; optional Writing asks for a supported position on an issue.

Organize your study by the sections you will actually take. An English punctuation error, a Math setup error, and a Reading inference error need different kinds of review.

How is it structured?

The enhanced ACT core has English (50 questions, 35 minutes), Math (45 questions, 50 minutes), and Reading (36 questions, 40 minutes). Optional Science adds 40 minutes; optional Writing adds a 40-minute essay. Confirm your testing program’s format and selected sections.

The enhanced ACT gives each core section its own time limit. Science and Writing add testing time when selected, so confirm the schedule and format for your administration.

Practice with section-length sets that match the current ACT. Develop a pacing plan for each subject and learn how to move past a difficult item without losing focus on the rest of the section.

How can I prepare?

Use official practice questions to identify priorities, work on pacing, and review missed questions. Confirm whether your intended programs recommend science or writing.

Begin with current official ACT preparation to identify your priorities in English, Math, and Reading. Add Science or Writing work if those sections are part of your testing plan.

Review why each mistake happened: unfamiliar content, a misread passage, an inefficient method, or rushed pacing. Revisit recurring errors and use timed sets to check whether your approach is becoming more reliable.

Official guidance and updates

Exam policies can change. Always confirm the current format, requirements, dates, fees, and accommodations with the exam provider.

Check the format, delivery mode, and Science or Writing options available for your ACT testing program. Review the admission-ticket instructions, identification rules, permitted calculator policy, accommodations, and score-reporting dates.

Use official material that matches the current ACT format. Build pacing plans for English, Math, and Reading, and decide whether to add Science or Writing after checking your intended colleges and programs.
